Minimizing Dental Anxiety with Advanced Technology

SOAN Pen-like Instrument

At Pediatric Dentistry of Sacramento, we understand that for some children, and even parents, just thinking about a dental visit can bring feelings of unease. Dental anxiety is very common, especially when it comes to concerns about a “shot.” For children (or parents) who have had difficult or uncomfortable experiences at another office, those worries feel even bigger.

That’s why we’ve made comfort a priority in everything we do. In addition to our specialized pediatric training, time tested gentle techniques and children first approach, we use the SOAN Anesthesia System, an advanced technology that allows us to deliver local anesthesia in a way that is more comfortable, more precise, and far less intimidating than traditional methods. We are proud to be one of the few pediatric dental practices in the Sacramento area offering this option for families.

What Makes SOAN Different?

Instead of a traditional dental syringe, SOAN uses a small, pen-like instrument that looks much less scary to children. Just as importantly, it is designed to make the entire numbing process smoother and more comfortable.

With SOAN, we’re able to:

  • Reduce anxiety with a more child-friendly, non-threatening design
  • Eliminate or minimize discomfort through slow, computer-controlled delivery
  • Shorten appointments by numbing the exact teeth quickly and efficiently
  • Improve precision, so only the treatment area is numb, reducing that lingering “fat lip” feeling

A Better Experience for Your Child

Many families notice a real difference when SOAN is used. Children often:

  • Feel more relaxed
  • Experience little to no discomfort during numbing
  • Stay calmer throughout their visit
  • Get back to their normal routine more quickly afterward

For parents, that means less worry and a smoother overall experience.

Compassion First, Technology Second

While technology like SOAN plays an important role, what truly matters is how your child is cared for. Our team is specially trained to work with children and is focused on creating a calm, supportive, and positive environment at every visit.

We take time to explain things in a way kids understand, move at a comfortable pace, and tailor each visit to your child’s individual needs. Our goal is to build trust, confidence, and help your child develop a positive association with dentists and dentistry for life.

Our Commitment to Your Family

At Pediatric Dentistry of Sacramento, we are committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based care with your child’s comfort and safety at the center of everything we do. Whether your child is here for a routine visit or treatment, you can feel confident knowing they are in caring and capable hands.

If you have questions about SOAN or your child’s upcoming visit, we’re always happy to help.

Frequently Asked Questions About SOAN Dental Anesthesia

Is SOAN anesthesia safe for children?
Yes. The SOAN Anesthesia System is FDA approved and uses the same FDA-approved local anesthetics as traditional methods. The difference is in how the anesthesia is delivered, more slowly, precisely, and comfortably, making it a safe and effective option for pediatric dental care.

Does SOAN replace the traditional dental shot?
Yes. The SOAN system allows us to numb teeth without the need for a traditional syringe-based injection in most cases. Depending on the procedure and your child’s specific needs, it can often completely replace or significantly reduce the need for a conventional “shot.”

Will my child feel pain with SOAN?
No. In our experience the overwhelming majority of children don’t even notice when we are giving anesthesia with the SOAN. Although nothing is 100%, this system comes extremely close. Some children report feeling sensations which feel “different”. We prepare the children by explaining they may feel “sparkles” or “tingles” or “slight pressure” on their gum during administration of the “sleepy juice”. Again, most don’t even notice when we give anesthesia.

How is SOAN different from a regular dental injection?
SOAN uses a pen-like device that delivers computer-controlled anesthetic directly to the teeth being treated. This allows for greater precision, faster onset, and less numbness in the lips, cheeks, and tongue compared to traditional dental injections. Due to the faster onset of the anesthesia, often the dentist can start and finish the treatment quicker, shortening the overall appointment time and improving the experience for the child.

Will my child’s face feel numb afterward?
In many cases, no, or significantly less. Because SOAN targets select teeth, it often avoids the widespread numbness that can cause children to bite their lips or cheeks after treatment.

Is SOAN better for anxious children?
Yes. Many children feel less anxious because the device looks innocuous and is less intimidating than a traditional syringe. Combined with its gentler delivery of anesthetic, the SOAN can significantly improve the overall experience for nervous patients.

Do all pediatric dentists in Sacramento offer SOAN?
No. SOAN is a specialized technology, and only a limited number of pediatric dental practices in the Sacramento area currently offer it. At Pediatric Dentistry of Sacramento, we have incorporated SOAN as part of our commitment to helping the child develop a positive association with dentists and dentistry for life.

What procedures can SOAN be used for?
SOAN is commonly used for fillings, crowns, extractions and all other routine restorative procedures. We will always evaluate whether it is the best option based on your child’s treatment needs.

Is SOAN more expensive than traditional anesthesia?
No. There is no difference in cost. We do not pass on the cost of the equipment to our parents. Our priority is using the techniques and equipment that provides the safest and most comfortable experience for your child. Period.
