Demineralization (Post-Orthodontic White Spots)

The most common cause of white spot lesions is enamel demineralization, often seen after orthodontic treatment. These spots typically form around areas where braces were attached, due to plaque accumulation from inconsistent brushing, flossing, or dietary habits during treatment.

These lesions represent early stages of enamel breakdown. Once they develop, they cannot be reversed with improved hygiene alone. Treatment options to improve their appearance include ICON, cosmetic bonding, or veneers. Among these, ICON often provides highly favorable esthetic results for this type of lesion.

Developmental (Idiopathic) White Spots

Some white spots form during tooth development and are not related to hygiene or diet. These are often classified as hypoplastic or hypomineralized enamel. They can vary widely in size and color, ranging from small white areas to larger yellow or brown patches.

Response to ICON treatment can be variable. Some cases show excellent cosmetic improvement, while others may only achieve partial blending.

Fluorosis

Fluorosis occurs when excessive fluoride is ingested during tooth development. It commonly appears as faint white streaks, lines, or areas of opacity across the enamel.

Similar to developmental lesions, fluorosis may respond unpredictably to ICON. Some patients experience significant esthetic improvement, while others may see more subtle changes.
